I'm not sure how you found this page, but I'm glad you did!
My name is Mike Coval and I'm the owner, and Head Trainer at COVAL Fitness in Ann Arbor, MI.
I struggled with a lot of things growing up; my weight, eating disorders, depression, and developing a growth mindset.
Some of that carried into my adult life, but along the way I've figured out how to best care for myself physically and mentally.
This has allowed me to not only be the best for myself, but for my family and my clients as well.
In college, I developed a passion for human performance, but it wasn’t until I interned with Indianapolis Fitness & Sports Training (IFAST, named one of America’s Top 10 Gym’s by Men’s Health) that I realized how deep that passion ran.
I was pretty sure near the end of my stay in college that I wanted to open my own gym, but after interning at IFAST I was 100% sure that opening a gym was the right move for me.
On May 2nd, 2011, I did just that and have been helping people transform their bodies, mindsets, and performance along with helping basketball players get stronger and more explosive on the basketball court.
I've been coaching since 2008 and during that time have helped people from all walks of life.
A 90-year old with Alzheimer's.
An NBA player trying to keep his spot on the roster.
A busy professional father of 4 who wanted to be able to pick his son up in his wheelchair without low back pain.
I've seen it all.
I couldn't care less the demographic I work with. All I care about is working with people who genuinely want to get better and are ready to put in the work. That's where life changing transformations happen that impact not only the individual, but the people that they love and care about as well.
The truth is I'm a pretty average guy who strives to live a much more than average life. I have a pretty good idea of what my limitations are from a genetic standpoint, but am consistently working to utilize my mind and environment to surpass well beyond what I was "meant to be".
If you believe you can do the same, then we're going to be a great team if we work together.
In my spare time, I enjoy playing basketball, watching basketball, lifting weights , reading & spending time with his wife, Heba, & their daughter, Mya, along with their 3 dogs.
Degree: Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science from Western Michigan University
Professional Certifications: USAW Sports Performance Level 1, Precision Nutrition Level 1 (Pn 1) Nutrition Coach, Strongfirst (SFG) Level 1 Kettlebell Instructor, FRC (Functional Range Conditioning)
There are plenty of facilities available in Ann Arbor and coaches online that offer excellent general fitness options for everyone or specific niche crowds. These venues are cheaper because they have general systems that they have scaled and allow them to make a greater profit while providing an option to the consumer that is budget friendly.
There's nothing wrong at all with that and I refer people to places like those all of the time as they can be great health & fitness options for a lot of people.
I'm not trying to appeal to a lot of people though.
I want someone who is process oriented, appreciates the details and nuance that goes into one's health & fitness, and who is ready to mentally and physically put in some serious work.
I go into great detail with each client's journey. I use all of the knowledge that I have in the realms of biomechanics, exercise physiology, psychology, human behavior, and many other disciplines of human life and performance and apply it to my work with my clients.
What I do isn't' for everybody and I don't take offense to that. If you're someone who wants a plan and coaching that is tailored specifically for you, then I'm your guy. If you're looking for something more generalized, then that's perfectly fine too! Just email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) and let me know the top 2-3 things that you're looking for in a trainer or gym and I will happily refer you to a team or trainer locally that would be a great fit for you.
I've helped clients from all different backgrounds: fitness level, ages, genders, medical conditions, athletes, former athletes...you name it I've helped them.
If you would like to hear some stories of how I have helped awesome people like you, then check our reviews out on Google.
As of April 2023, unless you work with me privately, 1-on-1, then I'd say the chances of us working together in-person are low.
However, there might be slots available for online training so make sure you check those out on the site.
"I worked with Coval Fitness multiple times before I decided to sign up. I struggled with the price as other gyms were less expensive. I tried multiple options but never ended up making a consistent healthy option. I signed up for Coval with the idea that I would use it short-term to prepare for a trip. The benefit that I have seen in my life I keep going. My personalized plans help me grow in strength and become more healthy."
"I've always been one to shy away from gyms, not feeling like I fit with the culture. My experience with COVAL has flipped my preconceived notion. COVAL is one of the most welcoming and places that I've had the pleasure to work out in and develop a community with.
COVAL has given me the tools to be successful in weight loss, meal prep, nutrition and exercise techniques. If you're shy or hesitant about taking the next step towards a healthier and happier you like I was, know that you'll quickly find a home at COVAL. What better way to invest, than to invest in yourself!"
